The US Youth Soccer Board of Directors has approved the implementation of age group registration by calendar year, as mandated by the U.S. Soccer Federation.

Starting next soccer season (Fall 2016, and Summer 2017) the age grouping will change. Currently age grouping is based on school-year age grouping, where a players age by August 1st determines which age bracket they are placed in. The new grouping will be calendar-year age grouping. This means that when a player registers (for fall or next summer season) the age bracket they are placed in will be determined by how old the player will be on their birthday that year.

Another change coming will be the understanding of the meaning of the age brackets. This year, and in years past, we have understood U6 to mean "Under 6". The new age brackets change the meaning to be "6 and under" for the U6 bracket. This will also go into effect starting Fall 2016 season.

Here are some examples of the old and new groupings to help understand them:

John is born on June 23rd, 2010. John turns 6 in June, thus under the old rules he would be in the U8 (Under 8) bracket that is for players age 6-7. Under the new rules, he would be placed in the U6 (6 and Under) bracket that is for players age 4-6.

Another example is Katie. Katie is born September 6th, 2010. Katie also turns 6, but in September. Under the old rules, Katie would be placed in the U6 (Under 6) age bracket for players age 4-5 because Katie was still 5 on the August 1st cut off date. Under the new rules, Katie would still be placed in the U6 (6 and Under) age bracket for players age 4-6 since Katie turns 6 that calendar year.
